Stage 3 and 4 and Higher Education

Design and Technology

Aims

This programme does not attempt to cover the Design and Technology syllabi, but instead aims to raise a number of design issues using vehicle design as an illustration. Students engage in discussions of the implications of the elements of design, observing and comparing design changes with time.

Design, Technology and History

Programme

The issues which may be considered during your visit would include; the transfer of technology and design from one industry to another, design parameters imposed by marketing constraints, the psychologist’s role in the design of the motor car, the use of colour shape and form. The programme begins with an introductory talk in one of the conference rooms or the museum reception area. The guided talk which follows will cover all of the above using the museum exhibits as a resource to reinforce the concepts discussed. After lunch there will be an opportunity for individual study of the exhibits, group leader initiated projects, or preparation of any worksheet activities. The use of cameras is encouraged. If you feel that a ride in the museum’s vehicles would be helpful then this can be arranged.
