Ivan Mauger OBE MBE 1939 - 2018

23rd Apr 2018

We are very sad to hear of the death of speedway legend Ivan Mauger at his home in Australia’s Gold Coast.

Ivan, who was born in New Zealand, rode for several teams including Wimbledon, Newcastle, Bell Vue Aces (Manchester), Hull, Australasia and Exeter Falcons the home of which is only 50 miles away from the Museum.

He won a record six world championships and by many was, and still is, regarded as the world’s best speedway rider.   So great was Ivan’s reputation and popularity that, as a result of a bet, his bike was plated with gold when he won his third world championship on it in 1970.  The ‘Triple World Special’ is on display at Canterbury Museum in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Exeter and the world of speedway lost another hero, Václav Verner, earlier this year.

Ivan and Václav’s lives and achievements will be celebrated at a special evening event arranged by Exeter Falcons to be held on Monday 30th April 2018 at 7:30pm at The Royal Oak Inn, 68 Okehampton Street, Exeter EX4 1DY.  Enquiries regarding the event can be made to Exeter Falcons at exeterfalcons2015ltd@hotmail.com
